Odisha sunlight from March to June is intense and slightly yellow. A pure white wall (RAL 9010 type) reads glaring by noon and blue-grey at dusk. They soften the glare, hide the fine dust that arrives with every westerly, and make teak and brass look richer.

In duplexes and independent homes, put one bedroom with an attached, grab-bar-ready bathroom on the ground floor. Anti-skid 300 x 300 mm tiles, a 32 in door, and a two-way switch at the bed. This is the most requested change in joint-family homes we renovate.

8. Shoe and umbrella storage at the entrance

Monsoon and the habit of removing footwear demand a proper foyer unit: a 16 in deep shoe cabinet with louvred shutters for ventilation, a bench, and a drip tray for umbrellas. Louvres matter; closed shoe cabinets in humid months smell within weeks.

9. Teak and Sal where wood is visible, ply where it is hidden

A solid teak or Sal frame for the main door, a teak veneer on the TV wall, and BWP plywood carcasses everywhere else. This gives the look of wood with the budget and stability of engineered boards. Sal is heavy and honest; teak is lighter and more figured. Both resist termites better than imported softwoods.

10. Laminate on the lower half, paint on the upper

In busy passages and children's rooms we fit a 3 ft high laminate or fluted panel dado with a paint finish above. It takes scuffs, cleans with a damp cloth, and hides the moisture line that rises in ground-floor walls during a long monsoon.

• Open shelving in the kitchen: dust and oil vapour coat everything in a fortnight.
• Carpet-to-carpet flooring: humidity and mould make it unhygienic within two monsoons; use rugs on tile instead.
• Sealing the verandah with glass: you lose the breeze that makes the home liveable from October to March.
• Choosing furniture before measuring: a readymade 84 in sofa in a 10 ft wide living room leaves no circulation.

If you can only do three things this year

Repaint in a warm off-white with one accent wall, replace the cool tube lights with 3000 K fittings on two circuits, and build a louvred foyer unit for shoes and umbrellas.
