Small Apartment Interior Design in Odisha: 1BHK and 2BHK Space-Saving Ideas With Real Dimensions

A 1BHK in Patia or a compact 2BHK in Cuttack's Link Road belt is often 500 to 850 sq ft, home to a couple, a child and, several weeks a year, visiting parents. Small does not have to mean cramped. The trick is dimensioned planning: knowing that a 21 in deep wardrobe still works, that a 30 in wide dining fits four, and that storage above 7 ft is free space nobody is using.

Full-height storage walls

In a 10 x 12 ft bedroom, one wall of 21 in deep storage from floor to ceiling, with the top 30 in as loft, holds everything a couple owns. Sliding aluminium-frame shutters need only 18 in of clearance; details in our wardrobe design guide.

Bed with hydraulic storage

A 60 x 78 in queen bed with a gas-lift top gives roughly 20 cubic ft of quilt and suitcase storage, better than side drawers in rooms where the bed touches a wall. Use BWP ply for the box; the mattress traps humidity.

Over-door and over-window lofts

A 24 in high, 14 in deep loft above the bedroom door and above the passage stores festival items and luggage; laminate-finished HDHMR shutters with push latches keep it clean.

Window-seat storage in the living room

A 16 in deep, 18 in high bench under the living window gives seating for three and a lift-up box for bedding that visiting parents will use.

Dining that folds or tucks

A wall-mounted fold-down table 30 x 42 in on a heavy-duty bracket, or a 30 x 48 in table with two stools that slide under, serves four and disappears when guests need floor space.

Kitchen tall unit instead of open shelves

In a 6 x 8 ft kitchen, one 24 in wide tall unit with pull-out baskets replaces three open racks and hides the grain and pulses that attract insects in the monsoon.

Layout Moves for Each Room

Living-dining, 10 x 14 ft

• Wall-mount the TV on a slim 12 in deep panel; skip the floor-standing unit.
• A 72 in sofa on the long wall, a 30 x 48 in dining at the kitchen end, and nothing in the centre except a small nesting table.
• Foyer: a 12 in deep shoe cabinet with a louvred shutter and a mirror above; the mirror makes the entrance feel double its size.

Master bedroom, 10 x 11 ft

• Bed centred on the short wall, 24 in walkway on both sides, 12 in wide floating side ledges instead of tables.
• Storage wall on the long wall; dresser integrated as a 20 in section with a mirror shutter.
• Study ledge 18 in deep under the window if work-from-home is a reality.

Second bedroom, 9 x 10 ft

• A 48 in wide bed against the wall with a trundle or storage below for the child and a visiting grandparent.
• Wardrobe 21 in deep with a loft; a 16 in deep study desk that runs into the window sill.

Colour

• One wall colour throughout the flat, ideally a warm off-white; changing colours room to room chops the space.
• Wardrobe and TV panel laminates in a light oak, ash or pale grey; dark walnut reads heavy in 10 ft rooms.
• A single accent, in the bedroom bed-head wall or the dining niche, in a muted olive, terracotta or dusty blue.
• Floor: keep the builder's tiles unless cracked; a 5 x 8 ft light rug in the living area is enough.

Light

• Skip full false ceilings in rooms under 9 ft 6 in; use a 12 in perimeter pelmet with a cove strip or surface-mounted slim panels.
• Warm 3000 K throughout, with 4000 K only in the kitchen and study ledge.
• Sheer curtains on a ceiling-mounted track keep the window wall as light as possible; blackout only in the bedroom.
• A mirror on the wardrobe shutter opposite the window doubles the perceived width of a 10 ft bedroom.

Ventilation

Small flats overheat fast. Use 1200 mm fans in bedrooms, keep the balcony door glazed rather than solid, and fit a 6 in exhaust in the kitchen and bathroom on a timer so the monsoon smell never settles.
